NATO estimated that combined defence spending by its members would reach about $1.59 trillion in 2025. The figures were published in the Alliance's annual report covering military expenditure from 2014 to 2025.
The report uses information supplied by national defence ministries under NATO's common definition of defence spending. It includes spending on armed forces, major equipment, research and development, personnel and some military related pensions.
NATO said figures for 2024 and 2025 were estimates based on information available as of 3 June 2025. It also warned that its figures may differ from national budgets because NATO and national governments do not always use the same accounting rules.
