NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte traveled to northern Norway this week for talks with Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Store, capping the visit with a firsthand look at alliance military capabilities in the High North.

Rutte called the region strategically vital and pressed for tighter coordination among the seven NATO members with territory above the Arctic Circle — Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden and the United States. He pointed to rising Russian and Chinese activity in the area, and to the opening of new Arctic shipping routes, as security questions the alliance can no longer treat as secondary.

The Secretary General tied the trip directly to preparations for the upcoming NATO summit in The Hague, repeating his call for higher defense investment across the alliance while singling out Norway's approach to civil preparedness for praise.
