NATO leaders agreed to raise defence and security investment to 5 percent of gross domestic product by 2035 during their summit in The Hague.

Under the plan, members committed 3.5 percent of gross domestic product to core military needs and 1.5 percent to related areas such as infrastructure, industry, networks and civil preparedness. The new target replaced the earlier goal of spending at least 2 percent on defence.

Leaders also called for higher defence production and confirmed continued support for Ukraine. The summit took place on 24 and 25 June and included meetings of heads of government, defence ministers, foreign ministers and the NATO Ukraine Council.

Türkiye was selected to host the next NATO Summit in 2026. NATO said progress toward the new investment commitment would be reviewed in 2029.
