Lithuanian Lieutenant General Remigijus Baltrenas began a three year term as Director General of the NATO International Military Staff.
He succeeded Polish Lieutenant General Janusz Adamczak, who completed his term on 10 July. NATO chiefs of defence selected Baltrenas for the position in September 2024.
The director general coordinates work between the Military Committee, NATO's two strategic commanders, national military representatives and the civilian International Staff. The office helps prepare military advice for NATO's political leadership.
