The European Union and Sri Lanka held the eighth meeting of their Working Group on Governance, Rule of Law and Human Rights in Colombo, continuing a structured dialogue on democratic governance, legal reforms and fundamental rights.
The discussions formed part of the broader EU-Sri Lanka relationship and focused on areas where institutional reform, rights protection and rule-of-law standards remain central to cooperation. The meeting provided both sides with an opportunity to review progress and identify areas requiring further engagement.
For the EU, the talks were also a platform to underline the importance of accountability, inclusive governance and respect for international human rights obligations. Sri Lanka used the meeting to brief the EU on developments at national level and on the government’s reform agenda.
The working group concluded with both sides signalling their intention to continue dialogue through established bilateral mechanisms, keeping governance and rights issues connected to the wider political and economic partnership.
