The European Union supported efforts to develop a longer-term strategy for the Arms Trade Treaty ahead of its 12th Conference of States Parties, saying the treaty community needs clearer goals and better ways to measure progress.

The EU welcomed a United Kingdom proposal for work on a strategy that would address structural challenges facing the treaty. Brussels said performance indicators could help determine whether implementation is effectively preventing illicit conventional arms trade and reducing human suffering.

The EU noted that similar principles, including stronger measurement and coordination, are already reflected in the fourth phase of its Arms Trade Treaty outreach project for 2025-2028.
