The European Union told the UN Security Council that maritime security requires stronger prevention, innovation and international cooperation as threats at sea become increasingly complex.
The EU linked secure maritime routes to global trade, energy security, food supply and international stability. It also pointed to the need to address piracy, organised crime, attacks on shipping and risks to critical maritime infrastructure.
Brussels said international law, particularly the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea, should remain the foundation for cooperation and dispute management at sea.
