The EU Gulf of Guinea Security and Defence Initiative highlighted new training activity for Beninese forces as part of the European Union’s effort to strengthen security cooperation with countries in the region.

The training, delivered by Spanish military personnel, focused on capabilities considered important for responding to threats affecting coastal and neighbouring states in West Africa. The initiative forms part of a broader EU approach to maritime security, border management and regional resilience.

For the EU, the Gulf of Guinea remains a strategic area where instability, organised crime, terrorism and maritime insecurity can overlap. The Benin activity reflected a practical approach built around partner-country needs and European support to local security capacity.

The programme showed how the EU is using targeted training and defence cooperation to move beyond diplomatic declarations and provide operational support to regional partners.
