The EEAS published the EU’s 2024 Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World, placing the document in the context of multiple and cascading global crises.

The report reviews the EU’s external action on human rights at a time marked by war in Europe, renewed conflicts elsewhere and increasing pressure on democratic freedoms. It serves as a reference document for how the EU assesses rights conditions and promotes democracy globally.

The publication covers thematic areas such as rule of law, civic space, accountability, gender equality, children’s rights, freedom of expression and the protection of human rights defenders. It also reflects country-level engagement through EU delegations and missions.

By publishing the report, the EU reaffirmed that human rights and democracy remain central to its foreign policy, even as security, migration and economic pressures compete for political attention.
