The European Union condemned a new wave of Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities during an emergency meeting of the UN Security Council, arguing that the strikes came as high-level diplomatic efforts were continuing to seek an end to the war.

EU Ambassador Stavros Lambrinidis said attacks on civilians and civilian infrastructure remained incompatible with genuine efforts toward peace. The EU reiterated its call for an immediate, full and unconditional ceasefire and said Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity must be respected.

Brussels maintained that any durable settlement must be based on the UN Charter and international law, while continuing political, financial and military support for Ukraine.
