The European Union welcomed the formation of Syria’s National Authority for Transitional Justice and National Authority for Missing Persons, calling the steps important for accountability and reconciliation.
The EU said credible transitional justice is essential for addressing the legacy of conflict, including enforced disappearances, arbitrary detention and violations committed against civilians. The establishment of dedicated bodies was presented as a possible opening for a more inclusive and accountable process.
Brussels also stressed that such institutions must operate independently, transparently and in line with international standards. Families of the missing and victims of abuses remain central to any meaningful justice process.
The statement linked transitional justice to the wider goal of a peaceful, inclusive and pluralistic Syria, making clear that institutional announcements will need to be followed by credible implementation.
