Communities across Europe are being invited to explore how cultural heritage can be protected, restored and reimagined as the 2026 European Heritage Days focus on sites and traditions facing growing risks.
Events taking place throughout September and October are being organised under the theme “heritage at risk: revive, resist, reimagine.”
The programme highlights the work of communities protecting cultural heritage from threats that can include environmental pressures, deterioration, conflict, changing social conditions and other forms of damage or loss.
European Heritage Days provide access to cultural sites, monuments and activities across participating countries while encouraging public discussion about how heritage can be preserved for future generations.
The 2026 programme places particular emphasis on resilience and on the role communities can play in restoring and adapting cultural heritage without losing its historical and social value.
The initiative is part of Europe's wider effort to strengthen public participation in cultural heritage and increase awareness of the pressures facing important cultural assets.
