The European Commission has launched a civil protection mission to Greenland to help strengthen emergency preparedness as climate change increases the risk of natural disasters across the Arctic.

The mission was activated following a request from Greenland and Denmark through the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, with European experts examining how authorities can prepare for hazards including wildfires, landslides and flooding caused by melting ice.

Experts from Denmark, Finland, Iceland, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland and Sweden are taking part, working alongside Greenlandic and Danish authorities to review emergency planning, search and rescue capabilities and natural-hazard management.

The deployment follows a Joint Declaration signed by the EU, Greenland and Denmark during Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's visit to Nuuk on 7 September, covering deeper cooperation on civil protection and disaster resilience.
