The European Food Safety Authority and the European Commission have launched new practical resources to help farmers, small flock owners and veterinarians reduce the risk of avian influenza as Europe approaches the autumn bird migration season.
The #NoBirdFlu campaign focuses on five basic biosecurity measures: controlling access to farms, maintaining effective cleaning and disinfection, preventing contact with wild birds, keeping poultry species separate and recognising signs of disease early.
European authorities said cases usually rise during the winter migration period. Between October 2025 and June 2026, almost 8,000 outbreaks were detected in Europe, with detections among wild birds four times higher than the previous winter.
Bird flu prevention starts with everyday biosecurity, said Nikolaus Kriz, EFSA's Executive Director, while the Commission's Claire Bury said working together across Member States can help reduce the risk of outbreaks and protect animal health, food production and livelihoods.
