The European Commission said pledges to the OceanEye International Alliance for the Global Ocean Observing System have reached at least €211 million after a high-level event at the UN General Assembly.

The alliance brings together international partners to strengthen the Global Ocean Observing System, which receives contributions from 64 countries and produces more than 120,000 ocean observations each day, with the Commission contributing €62 million through Horizon Europe.

Ocean data supports weather forecasting, climate projections, maritime safety and coastal resilience, though the Commission says the system remains vulnerable because 90 per cent of global observations are funded by only nine countries.

OceanEye is part of the European Ocean Pact and is intended to expand coverage and strengthen long-term international cooperation on ocean science.
