The European Commission proposed delaying certain implementation deadlines under the EU Methane Regulation, which establishes requirements for monitoring, reporting and reducing emissions associated with oil, gas and coal.
The proposal would give importers and regulators additional time to establish procedures for demonstrating that monitoring and verification measures applied to imported fossil fuels meet the required standards.
The Commission cited disruptions to energy markets and concerns about implementation readiness, while maintaining that methane reduction remains an important part of European climate policy.
The proposed changes would require approval by the European Parliament and the Council before taking legal effect. Existing obligations remain governed by the current regulation unless the amendment is adopted.
