The European Commission highlighted Danish startup Decameal, which is developing methods to transform abundant shore crabs into ingredients for aquaculture and animal feed.

The company uses processing methods intended to recover valuable material from whole crabs, including proteins and shell-derived substances with potential industrial applications.

Founded by biologists Leander Hessner and Happylan Natkunarajah, Decameal has operated a pilot facility and attracted grants and private investment to develop its technology.

The company's approach illustrates how marine biotechnology and circular resource use can create economic value while responding to pressures affecting coastal ecosystems.
