The European Commission announced the operation of an additional information-alert mechanism within the Schengen Information System, allowing participating authorities to use relevant intelligence received from international partners.

The mechanism concerns individuals suspected of involvement in terrorism or serious organised crime and involves an assessment process supported by Europol.

National authorities remain responsible for deciding whether an alert meets the legal conditions for entry into the system. An information alert is not automatically an arrest warrant.

The change is intended to improve cooperation between border authorities and police while retaining applicable requirements for information accuracy and data protection.
