The European Commission and Germany agreed to strengthen cooperation on water resilience, with measures intended to improve water quality, address scarcity and reinforce implementation of European water legislation.
European Commissioner for Environment, Water Resilience and a Competitive Circular Economy Jessika Roswall and German Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety Carsten Schneider signed a joint statement in Berlin.
The initiative comes as climate change, pollution, drought and competing demand from households, agriculture, industry and ecosystems place increasing pressure on European freshwater resources.
The two sides identified areas requiring further action and set out an improvement plan intended to support sufficient supplies of higher-quality water for people, businesses and nature. The agreement also supports the EU’s wider effort to translate water-resilience objectives into national implementation.
