The European Commission says the five EU Missions created under Horizon Europe are producing tangible results in tackling major societal challenges, according to a new mid-term assessment published on September 14.

The Missions focus on adaptation to climate change, cancer, restoring oceans and waters, developing climate-neutral and smart cities, and improving soil health, designed to connect research and innovation with practical action and measurable goals by 2030.

The Climate-Neutral and Smart Cities Mission aims to deliver 100 climate-neutral and smart cities by 2030, while the Soil Deal for Europe is working toward 100 living labs and lighthouses to support healthier soils.

The Restore our Ocean and Waters Mission is focused on protecting and restoring marine and freshwater ecosystems, the Mission on Adaptation to Climate Change supports regional resilience, and the Cancer Mission combines research, prevention, diagnosis, treatment and quality-of-life measures.

The Commission said the mid-term review demonstrates the value of the mission-based approach but also points to the need for continued coordination, financing and stronger links between research results and large-scale implementation.
