The European Commission's Joint Research Centre has opened a series of events at the 70th International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference in Vienna marking 50 years of cooperation between Euratom and the IAEA.
The programme, running from September 14 to 18, focuses on nuclear safeguards, non-proliferation, nuclear security and emergency preparedness, while also examining sustainable approaches to nuclear materials and waste.
The flagship event on September 14 reviews five decades of IAEA-Euratom cooperation and addresses resource recovery, material reuse, medical nuclide recovery, advanced infrastructure and stakeholder engagement for sustainable nuclear waste management.
A later session will focus on strengthening coordination in nuclear emergency preparedness and response. The Joint Research Centre will present its DAPHNE methodology, which complements environmental radiation monitoring systems and supports rapid diagnosis following accidents.
The Commission says the system can help authorities plan protective measures, assess emergency plans and prioritise resources, alongside the EU's ECURIE and EURDEP systems, which are interoperable with relevant IAEA global systems.
