The United Nations Department of Economic and Social Affairs has launched SDG Chat, an artificial intelligence tool designed to make reliable information on the Sustainable Development Goals easier to access for policymakers, researchers, students, civil society organizations and the wider public.
The platform draws on more than 800 United Nations publications as well as UN DESA departmental and divisional websites. Users can ask questions about development challenges and receive responses grounded in authoritative UN DESA material, while being directed toward original reports, data and other resources.
UN DESA Under-Secretary-General Li Junhua said the initiative demonstrates the United Nations' commitment to the responsible use of AI and to delivering on the promise of the SDGs, expressing hope that the tool will help accelerate progress towards the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
The service can provide answers in all six official UN languages: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, Russian and Spanish. UN DESA stressed that the tool is not intended to replace expert analysis or official publications, but to serve as an entry point to trusted UN information.
The initiative was developed by UN DESA with the UN Office of Information and Communications Technology and Accenture, combining knowledge curation, guidance on responsible AI and technical expertise.
