UNICEF has expressed deep concern over escalating hostilities in northern Ethiopia, warning that children and their families are again facing violence after communities spent years rebuilding schools, health services and water systems.
The UN children's agency said it was aware of reports of children being killed or injured as well as damage to residential areas and public facilities.
UNICEF Regional Director for Eastern and Southern Africa Etleva Kadilli said she is deeply concerned by the escalation of hostilities in northern Ethiopia and the impact on children and their families, urging all parties to exercise restraint, protect children and civilian infrastructure and uphold international humanitarian law.
UNICEF also called for safe, rapid and unimpeded humanitarian access so communities can continue receiving essential services.
