The Food and Agriculture Organization and World Food Programme warned that nearly 19.2 million people in Afghanistan could face acute food insecurity during the November 2026 to April 2027 lean season.

The agencies reported that unemployment, high costs, population movements and limited humanitarian resources were increasing pressure on families. They also warned of rising malnutrition among women and children.

Even where agricultural conditions had improved, many households lacked sufficient income to purchase nutritious food or the resources needed to maintain farm production.

The agencies appealed for timely food, nutrition and agricultural assistance before winter conditions further restricted access to vulnerable communities.
